Now that the Virginia House
of Delegates is essentially in control of social conservatives, that element of the Republican Party is aiming to gain more clout in the State Senate.
Led by former state GOP chairman Pat McSweeny three top moderate-conservative Senate leaders are being challenged in the June 10 primary elections. All are members of the Senate Finance Committee and that is no coincidence.
McSweeny and others in the right wing of the party were enraged when in 2002 most Republicans on the Senate Finance Committee tried to block, at least temporarily, further implementation of then Gov. Gilmore’s car tax repeal.
Undergoing challenges in next month’s primary elections are Finance Committee chairman John Chichester of Stafford, Sen. Thomas Norment of Williamsburg, and Russ Potts of Winchester.
