While most teenaged girls would prefer to spend their summer sunning on the beach or walking on the boardwalk on a balmy, summer evening the Girls of Summer have spent their weekends on hot, dusty ballfields from one end of the Commonwealth to the other.
They have committed summer weekends to playing as many as five games. Sometimes these games go as late as 11 p.m. on a Saturday. Then you could find them in the hotel laundry room washing their uniforms at 1 a.m. in order to be ready for another game at 8 o’clock the next morning.
That is why your Lady Panthers are once again contenders for the state title. So who are these special Lady Panthers, these Girls of Summer?
Team Captain Rachel Sharp - Sr., P, SS, MVP and 2nd team all District as a sophomore, Coaches Award and 1st team all District as a junior. Rachel started playing softball in Culpeper Little League when she was nine years old.
She formerly played summer ball with X-treme and more recently with the prestigious Vienna Stars.
Ashleigh “Burkee” Burke - Jr., OF. Burkee started playing softball when she was six years old. She played in Culpeper Little League and later Xtreme.
Molly Burke, Jr. - IB, Molly started playing softball as a 10 year old in the Culpeper Little League and later X-treme. This summer she will play for the Fauquier Spitfire. She applies her cheerleading talent by demonstrating gymnastic splits at first base which has sent many a surprised runr
