If you like musicals and enjoy ballet, the place to be was the Wakefield Country Day School auditorium last weekend.
The entertainment began Friday evening with the Music Department’s presentation of “An Evening of Musicals.” Students from kindergarten through seventh Grade took their turns center stage to present selections from popular musical productions such as Mary Poppins, West Side Story, The Wizard of Oz, Annie, and The Music Man.
Surrounded by beautiful azaleas from Long Mountain Nursery, music teacher Evelyn Oyster put together a program with something for everyone.
There were group presentations complete with wonderful costumes, interspersed with lovely solos by eleventh grader Robin Oyster, who sang, “Feed the Birds,” ninth grader Michelle Fegeas, who sang, “Til There Was You,” accompanied on piano by her sister Nicole, as well as tenth grader Paul Beattie’s stirring version of “Maria.”
Wakefield teacher Emma Sue Amos, known in the Rappahannock community for her piano talents, provided the musical accompaniment. One of several show stoppers was the kindergarten’s enthusiastic rendition of “A Spoonful of Sugar,” and especially memorable was the amusing dance routine choreographed and performed by seventh graders Joy Heddleston, Cecelia Marschner and Jaclyn Dixon to the tune of “Easy Street.”
An added treat came on Sunday when WCDS Ballet Teacher Melissa Largent showcased her students in a memorable Spring Ballet, which featured performances by students who ranged in age from 4 to 13.
