Day-Lewis (last seen in 1997’s “The Boxer”) returns from spending the last few years as a cobbler’s apprentice in Italy and gives us a stellar performance as the murderous Bill the Butcher (so named not because of the men he has killed, but because he’s a butcher by profession).

Day-Lewis’ superb acting makes this good movie great, and brings out the best in his co-stars. DiCaprio does an admirable job as Amsterdam, especially in the powerful scene that takes place after the young man has saved the elder’s life.

Other standouts include Oscar-winning Jim Broadbept as the politician
