“I am absolutely persuaded that there is a deal,” Rothfeld ' said referring to an alleged Wamer-Chichester connection. “All the fs may not be dotted and the t’s crossed, but the fix is in for higher taxes next year.”
Chichester denied the allegation, saying that until it is clear what financial shape the state is in, “I’m certainly not going to favor raising taxes.”
Ironically, Chichester was the chief Senate sponsor of Gilmore’s car tax rollback after Gilmore took office. But as the state’s fiscal picture drew increasingly bleak, he and other GOP members of the Finance Committee had second thoughts about moving ahead with its phase out until the financial picture brightened.
