filled until incoming Superintendent Robert Chappell has had an opportunity to provide his input into the selection process (after July 1).
The positions abolished are currently held by Jack Raines (Assistant Superintendent) and Richard Smith (Director of Curriculum and Instruction), and both will have the opportunity to apply for the Executive Director position.
Mills also noted that additional cuts of $6,232 would be made in the textbook budget to bring total budget reductions to the $100,735 cut by the Board of Supervisors. He said that the textbook reductions were possible because of needs reduced by the new class scheduling approach.
At the end of his statement, Mills moved that the board adopt his proposal. The motion was seconded by Hampton District member Doug Baumgardner.
The motion passed by a vote of 4-1, with Wakefield District member Rosa Crocker being the only nay vote.
Crocker said that she would "support the action of the board but cannot vote for this proposal.
"There are other ways . . . preferable ways," she said, "and I believe that this is an unfortunate solution for this school system."
In other action, Acting Superintendent Helen Williams presented the board with the revised Six-Year Improvement Plan for 20022008.
She highlighted significant changes including: investigating additional vocational and foreign language offerings; a focus, by RCES and RCHS principals, on transitions between levels, programs and buildings; developing a plan for implementing internet technology for instruction at RCES; investigating means of reducing duplicate parental input of student information; and beginning the use of the greenhouse in selected programs.
Williams provided maintenance updates, reporting that parts for the malfunctioning air conditioning cooling tower at RCES had been ordered and were expected on May 15. She said that fans had been purchased for affected classrooms for use until the tower is repaired. She also noted that bid preparation work has begun on the RCES rewiring and boiler replacement jobs.
