Bus cut
from
budget

The Board of Supervisors voted last Wednesday four to one, with Roger Welch dissenting, to discontinue Rappahannock’s recently created bus system, the Rappahannock Express.
The board felt the bus service had been ineffective, with only 848 passengers siilce it began making stops around the county and weekly trips to nearby shopping areas six months ago. These numbers, they said, were too small to justify the $21,760 which was in the budget to keep the bus up and running through June 2004.
The little bus did not die quietly though.
The court room was packed with over 40 people, many of whom were senior citizens who had come out in hopes of saving Rappahannock’s public transportation.
They urged supervisors to give the bus a second chance, especially since it had recently undergone major changes. As of Aug. 18 those wishing to ride the bus could call 24 hours in advance to make a reservation for the bus to pick them up at home and take them where they needed to go.
They pointed out, this alleviated the task of getting to the bus stop, which was difficult for some seniors. In addition, board member Roger Welch said this method of running on
