But board members were concerned with how many, not who was riding the bus. They estimated that with its current ridership it was costing tax payers $10 each time someone rode the Rappahannock Express.
Board member Bryant Lee was pessimistic about the number of riders in winter months also, fearing that numbers would dip even lower with the coming of snow and cold weather.
But for some seniors thinking only about the dollars did not make sense.
“It’s a good thing,” said Sperryville resident Struther Brown. “A lot of us have two or three cars in our driveway and don’t care if so and so gets to their doctor’s appointment. But I do care. People are what matters, not tax dollars. A little more time is all it would cost. Just a few more dollars for people that need it.”
Welch agreed, noting that the roughly $21,000 which had been budgeted for the bus worked out to three dollars per person when spread over the county’s 7,000 citizens.
“It’s a bargain,” he said, asking others to consider the negative affects that not being able to get to these appointments may have.
