Department of Health, there has been a higher instance this year of birds infected with the potentially deadly West Nile virus than there were last year.
Many local residents are trying a variety of techniques to ward off these insects.
Lorinda Bosch of Amissville said she and her family use herbal repellents such as Greenban. She has also tried essential oils, including citronella. When she knows she will be going somewhere with a higher mosquito concentration, like the beach for example, she says she ups her protection by taking garlic in the days proceeding her visit.
