Many of them became unused as a result of the 1954 U. S. Supreme Court decision integrating schools.
A movement, begun several years ago by Warner himself, is now gaining momentum within Rappahannock to preserve the school.
“I just think it’s a sin that its restoration hasn’t taken place prior to now. We’re lucky to havfe it in the county,” said Bob Lander, a Rappahannock resident who has attempted to reinvigorate the Scrabble School Preservation Foundation which Warner created prior to his passing.
Rosenwald Schools were named for philanthropist Julius Rosenwald, president of Sears, Roebuck, who in 1917 established the Rosenwald Fund. Through this fund Rosenwald and his famous partner Booker T. Washington aided in the funding of 4,977 schools prior to the program’s end in 1932, according to the Architectural Survey Report of Rappahannock County.
Rosenwald’s organization contributed $28 million to this, but according to researcher Diane Granat this was only 15 percent of the total cost of the schools’ construction. The rest, she
