West Nile Virus
strikes horses
In what are the first reported equine cases of West Nile Virus in Rappahannock County, two horses belonging to horsewoman Jeanie McNear have tested positive to the mosquito-bome disease.
One of McNear’s horses, a five-year-old Shire-Thoroughbred mare had to be euthanized on Saturday. The other, a 25year-old Percheron Thoroughbred, is recuperating.
Throughout the state, 19 additional horses have tested positive this week, bringing the total of confirmed West Nile Virus horses to 61 for the year. Of the 19 new cases, four were in Culpeper and three in Fauquier County.
