really like the remediation opportunity that this will provide for students with an extended grading period," said Mills. "It allows them to take a breath."
While board members were unanimous in their support of this change for the elementary school, they all agreed that it would not work well at the high school level with the current 4 x 4 block scheduling.
Meanwhile, School superintendent Dr. Robert Chappell gave an update on the boiler replacement.
"I think that it would be better to wait until later in the year to go out with sealed bids," said Chappell who admits that both boilers are old but still functional and it would be better to replace them rather than spend any more money on repairs.
A leaky roof at the elementary school was another issue.
"We've had a fair number of complaints," said Chappell, "from teachers and parents and I think that we need to seriously consider re-roofing and removing the two layers that are already on there."
In addition to needing a new roof, Chappell said that replacing a portion with a pitched roof was another option that should be considered.
While all the School Board members agreed that the "flatroof approach was no longer viable, they were concerned about the cost to permanently fix the problem.
"I've had some discussions with the county administrator," said Chappell. "I know that he understands our position."
