Opening the winter film season at The Theatre on Gay Street in Washington will be “Bend it like Beckham” on Jan. 2.
Many in the movie-going community have requested this film and the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and Community is pleased to bring it. With new projection equipment providing the capability of VHS and DVD selections, a much wider selection of films is now available. Following is a listing of the outstanding winter film selections:
• Jan. 2: “Bend it like Beckham” (PG-13, 112 minutes). See review same page.
• Jan. 9: Showing at the Rappahannock t County Library on DVD will be how “Winged Migration” was filmed. Come see the French movie team sleeping with the young birds so that they might later fly with them. Showing at 8 p.m. Free of charge.
• Jan. 16: “Whale Rider” (PG-13, 101 minutes) A huge international hit, this contemporary story of love, rejection and triiimph concerns a 12-year-old girl who dares to challenge the tradition-bound status quo in her coastal village and emerges a leader of her Maori tribe, the Polynesian .people native to New Zealand.
• Feb. 6: “Rabbit-proof Fence” (PG, 95 minutes) The basis for the title of this true story is the path which three girls from Aboriginal and white parents follow when they flee from Western Australia. They leave their lives as domestic servants where they are not allowed to recognize their Aboriginal roots and set off on an incredible 1500 kilometer journey across the Outback. A memorable and moving film.
