Feb. 20: “In America” (PG-13, 100 minutes). An Irish family (mother, father and two young daughters) arrives in New York to begin a new life in the 1980s. As they settle into Hell’s Kitchen in pursuit of their American dream, it becomes clear that this family is haunted by a ghost—a son, Frankie, who died back home in Ireland.
• March 5: “Down from the Mountain” (G, 98 minutes). The musicians behind the Soggy Bottom Boys, which is the name of the fictional bluegrass band in the Coen brothers’ movie “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” are featured in this documentary, which centers on a bluegrass concert in Nashville given by the bands that contributed to O Brother’s soundtrack and provides a brief history of folk and bluegrass music. Film was produced before John Hartford’s death.
• March 19: “Mystic River” (R, 137 minutes) Jimmy Markum (Sean Penn), David Boyle (Tim Robbins) and Sean Devine (Kevin Bacon) were childhood friends who played stick hockey on the streets of Boston, growing up in a familiar, tough neighborhood, where nothing much changed until the day one of them got into the wrong car. Boyle’s abduction changed everything. Clint Eastwood directs his finest film.
