bhe was sitting on ner bed reading a recent book by Lappe. She had studied under the economist Herman Daly, author of “Steady State Economics.” Before I knew it _ we were arguing about the precepts of my “Sane Economy” which would give a citizen’s income to everyone and trust us to work when we see that work is needed.
Her objection echoed many others. “But who would volunteer to work if they didn’t have to?” It was interesting to learn that the Jewish Community Center alone usually signs up 1,500 volunteers for Christmas day. Many other churches and organizations recruit Christmas volunteers. This suggests that there were an enormous number of people spending this Christmas just as I was.
As I drove home the Messiah was playing on public radio. I sailed back into our undulating hills on those heavenly sounds.
