STATELY TOMBS The word “mausoleum” comes from the ancient Romans, who were sufficiently impressed with the tomb that was erected at Halicarnassus in the third century before Christ to honor King Mausulus of the nation then known as Caria (part of Asia Minor today). The tomb was included in the seven wonders of the Ancient World. This architectural influence of the mausoleum has been preserved to the present time . Perhaps the most enduring image of a mausoleum is that of the mughal Empress Mumtaz Mahal. Its curving, gently swelling dome and the square base upon which it rests is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular buildings in the world. As a tomb, it has no match on earth.
