As his military service was ending, Krebser answered an ad in a Swiss newspaper for a butcher in Burwell. Nebraska to succeed a retiring Swiss butcher. Krebser spoke French and German, and had studied Italian, but he knew no English. He arrived on the wind-swept plains of Nebraska in 1950, owing his sponsors $200.

He soon realized that there was no future in being a butcher in small town America. With encouragement from friends, he enrolled in the pre-veterinary program in Kearney State
