After debating, briefly,

The clients can usually get cold cereal, a piece of toast and coffee in the morning, but today I scrambled pan after pan of eggs which were received with heart-breaking enthusiasm.
Having spent many years working among the poor and very poor, among uneducated blacks, Indians and poor whites in rural and urban settings I thought I knew the sort of people to expect.
I was wrong.
At least the four people with whom I chatted at length were educated and articulate. Somehow they had fallen out of good jobs and good incomes and landed here in “the best shelter there is.”
