In a reversal of his previous decision, Rappahannock County Elementary School (RCES) Principal David Covington has decided to allow a controversial pro-life T-shirt to be worn in school by a seventh grader.
“I feel good about wearing it,” said the student, Kristin Taylor, 12, in an interview Monday. “You should stand up for what you believe in.”
The controversy arose on Nov. 2, Election Day, when Kristin Taylor, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Ed Taylor, (he is pastor of Amissville Baptist Church) wore the shirt to school.
The T-shirt is black with white lettering and shows a picture of an unborn child on the back. The front of the shirt says: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. Psalm 139:13.”
Before the instructional day began, a teacher sent Kristin Taylor to the office to ask her to change. Rev. Taylor brought a change of clothing for his daughter that day, but continued to press the matter at the Nov. 9 School Board meeting. He contended that the ban on the shirt violated his daughter’s right to free speech.
“I suggested to the Board before they adjourned (Nov. 9) that we handle the matter administratively.
