Cowherd died May 16 in Karbala, Iraq, while in the service of his country.

During the ceremony, Sharon Luke announced the establishment of the Leonard M. Cowherd Memorial Scholarship and Culpeper VFW Scholarship. This fund will go to new prep school students dedicated to academic pursuits, with strong leadership qualities, whose actions “honor the memory of Leonard,” Luke said.

Hickson, a former English teacher at the school, recalled memories of Cowherd.

“The key to Leonard was quite simple,” said Hickson. “Whatever he chose to do, he made sure it was the right thing to do, and he tried to do it in the right way. Very simple. Often very difficult. Always rewarding.”
