Joseph J. Scherschel, 83, of Columbus, Ind., died Nov. 11 at the Four Seasons Health Care Center in Columbus. He lived in Flint Hill for many years and considered Rappahannock his home.
Mr. Scherschel was born Dec. 18, 1920 in Chicago, 111., son of Alexander Scherschel and Elizabeth Marie Kratochvil Scherschel.
He attended Lawrence College, Northwestern University, and the Art Center in Los Angeles. He served as a photographer’s mate first class in the U. S. Navy and was in World War II.
Mr. Scherschel worked for the Milwaukee Journal from 1940 to 1946 and Life magazine from 1947 to 1962. He began as a staff photographer for National Geographic magazine in 1963 and became Assistant Director of Photography in 1972. He retired from the National Geographic Society in 1985.
