Former. U. S. Senator Charles S. Robb solemnly walked into Wakefield Country Day School’s auditorium behind the silent dignity of the school’s color guard last Thursday, Veterans’ Day.
In the procession with him was Kathleen Grove, WCDS Head of School, Sharon Luke, chairman of its Board of Directors, and Sharon Hickson, a former English teacher.
The group of speakers, along with at least 200 spectators, had turned out to honor the memory of Leonard Cowherd, a 1999 graduate of WCDS, who was killed in Iraq in May. During the ceremony, the school formally named its auditorium after him.
Cowherd was a first honors student at Wakefield and Class Salutatorian. He played lacrosse, soccer, cross-country, basketball, appeared in the annual school plays, was Vice President of the Student Government in his senior year, and was also a member of the Junior Classical League.
After graduating from WCDS, Cowherd went on to West Point. He graduated in May 2003. He was assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 37th Armor Regiment, 1st Armored Division, Friedberg, Germany.
