“Farming is important to the youth,” said Erivagama Suranimala as she smelled some of the herbs, “I am veiy pleased to see it.”
A shop tour led the group to see the hands on atmosphere created by Scott Scholosser, the shop instructor.
“We teach them a lot just by getting them to do it themselves,” he said. Scholosser also explained how the program included construction on various projects throughout the community helping the kids to learn. “It’s important to give something back to the community as the students learn skills,” he said, “we run it like a business so it teaches them business practices as well.”
Scholosser showed the visitors the computerized mill and exhibited several picture frames that the class had been working on.
One of the visitors, Mohamed Rashal, took great interest in the program. He said that it was good to see that students were trained to do things at home.
Bruener Newton, an educator from Pakistan, also examined the woodwork and talked at length with Scholosser.
The group followed Dr. Chappell and the team to see Technology Teacher Ron Vickers. Vickers displayed the schools Geospatial Technology Program. He spoke about the various projects that the students were able to complete using map making software.
