You know there’s something to be said for a place where when you walk in they call you by name and ask how you’ve been doing. The Chester Gap Grocery is one of those kind of ' places, a place where it just sort of lifts your spirits when you ■ ’ happen to stop in. Sonny and Mary Williams are the owners and spend much of their time there manning the register and supplying that one thing that most big box stores can’t, a personal interest in their customers. Sonny and Mary know most everyone who comes in their door by their first name and always ask how their day is going. You know I have to give l ’ I my wife credit for pointing out * *to me that we should make it a » point to stop in at the store ■■ .• «whenever we need only one or , • !tWo items instead of driving all l * ,’the way to town. If we don’t *) support such local businesses - * like Chester Gap Grocery then ’ • one day we’ll find ourselves *1 wishing we could stop in and l' just pass the time. * * * I personally have many •I'memories of stopping into the * • l store as a child with one friend '•Jor another to get a coke and * t ‘then sitting on the porch to »**drink it while listening to the *, *! older men talking. I learned a ’ • *lot from those gentlemen. I learned that at even at what I then considered to be old, Albert Cameron still had a grip as strong as an ox and must have been a heck of a guy when he was “coming up’ as they say. ’ Albert’s brother Delaney Cameron was there too along with Billy and Bradley Pullen, also Billy Wines and Leo 1 Williams and of course Bradley ’ Williams who I thought then would always be there. They 1 always had something funny to say or would try to pull one over on us, sometimes we’d see it coming and sometimes we’d gain some valuable experience 1 that did indeed come in handy later on in life. Some of these gentlemen have passed on to better places and fortunately some are still with us yet, still sharing that insight and wit that helped shape my on life in one way or another.
