Allen was asked again to explain his use of the word “macaca,” which is an ethnic slur in certain countries, that he directed at a Webb campaign volunteer who is of Indian descent. He maintains that he made the word up and meant no offense by it.
Webb offered a partial apology for a column he wrote in the 1970s arguing against full participation by women in the military and tried to put it in context. He said he apologizes if anyone was insulted by the tone of the column but said it was an important conversation to have at that time, adding that he opened up more positions to women while serving as Secretaiy of the Navy under President Ronald Reagan.
