jams and famous apple butter at the roadside stand, Sperryville Farms, since the late 70s. After a 30 year career with the government, Ivan had retired from a position at the US Post Office and built a home in Sperryville.
Mr. Hall was bom in 1923. Like so many others, Mr. Hall’s family had become impoverished during the Depression and moved from a comfortable life on 1000 acres in Illinois to live with family in Hillsville, Virginia. Mr. Hall served in WWII in the Third Army under Patton, surviving, he believes, because of his skills learned in hunting in the country. He worked for Dan River Mills, later did railroad mail work, pnd ultimately worked his way up to being in charge of general accounting for the US Post Office. He was awarded a White House Fellowship, but was unable to accept it when USPS became a quasi-corporate entity.
Mr. Hall is delighted to be “back from the dead” at his roadside stand selling flowers, fruits and vegetables. He and his wife continue to make their own preserves and apple butter. Mr. Hall also dispens
