TRADITION
According to Jewish tradition, the body of the deceased should be buried within 24 hours, although exceptions are made when the body must be transported great distances or family members live far away. Embalming is waived, and there is no viewing, as it is preferred that the deceased be remembered as he or she was in life. There is a traditional washing of the remains, after which the body is dressed in shrouds. The white linen garments help to illustrate that we are all equal in death. The body should also be accompanied at all times between death and burial. At the cemetery, family members and close friends toss the first shovelfuls of dirt on the casket, followed by others.
