Far from wilting from Fields of Omagh’s assault, Father Paul dug in, swinging inside after the last and zipping to 2 1/2-length victory.
“I think going just that ‘step’ slower in timber suits him,” Walsh said of the win, which in 6:04 was the fastest of three at the distance on the day. Father Paul converted to timber this spring after two modest seasons over hurdles. He broke his timber maiden at the Potomac pointto-point in May before being put away for the summer.
Fields of Omagh finished second, with Loughbeg Rambler third. All three are expected next in National Steeplechase Association sanctioned races later this month or in October.
The maiden timber winner, too, looks like a future ‘chasing standout. Straight Gin, who started in the 2002 Preakness Stakes, is the first steeplechaser for owner Kim Zito. Husband Nick Zito, who trained both Straight Gin and sire Go For Gin — 1994 Kentucky Derby winner — gave Straight Gin to Kim after the colt broke down in the Preakness.
