It is often said that “all politics is local,” but, in this week’s two debates in the Virginia Senate race, all politics was national and personal.

At the two forums, Republican Sen. George Allen and Democratic challenger Jim Webb were asked about the war in Iraq, their comments in the recent and distant past that have offended some, their vices and their opinions on immigration and health care.
