A few weeks ago, Flint Hill resident Geoff Gowen drove to Washington, D.C., with a young friend, 16year-old Chris.
“Chris wanted to see the Lincoln Memorial and the National Christmas Tree,” said Gowen. “We stopped at the WWII memorial, saw the Vietnam memorial, and then the Korean War memorial. Chris really liked that one - the statues of soldiers are realistic, sort of larger than life.”
Over two dozen Rappahannock County children have friends like Geoff Gowen, thanks to Headwaters’ Starfish Mentoring Program. Starfish's trained adult volunteers meet regularly with Rappahannock County youth aged six to 18, acting as caring role models, listeners, guides, and just plain friends.
The mentors help their young friends with homework, teach them to cook, take them to museums and concerts, go hiking, play games, and sometimes just hang out and talk.
