On Sunday, Jan, 19, the 9:30 a m., and 11 o’clock services at Trinity Episcopal Church will be combined and held beginning at 9 a.m. The Rev. Robert Hall, Bishop Coadjutor of the Diocese of Virginia, will install the Rev. William Hargett as Rector of Bromfield Parish. The early hour is necessary because it was possible to give the Diocese only four weeks notice and its Bishops are scheduled six months in advance for Confirmations on Sunday.
The north fork of the Thornton River is frozen solid in many places with the water rippling along beneath the icy crust. Ponds have offered much recreation to skaters and a large group often gathers at the Carson Johnson pond in Sperryville. Much of the cold weather has been made more disagreeable by the persistent high winds accompanying it.
Tuesday’s blustery weather caused a field and woods fire at Rappahannock County High School. In spite of the grating over the incinerator at the back of the high school, wind whipped burning trash into the dry grass, and fanned by the brisk winds, it traveled rapidly into the woods nearby. The response of the Sperryville and Washington fire departments, quick action by the basketball team practicing in the gym and stalwart efforts of school custodian, Alvin Atkins, the blaze was brought under control without much damage.
