and Kim probably spend more time on homework than do other Starfish mentoring pairs. “Kim wants to be a teacher,” she explained. “She has ambitions. That’s very helpful - because we know what we’re working toward and see when her actions go against what she truly wants. Like all teenagers - like all people - problems come up that get in her way. She doesn’t ever become discouraged; she always looks on the good side of things.”
Kim enthusiastically confirmed: “I want to teach 7th grade math - I love math.”
Armistead said she takes great satisfaction in Kim’s pleasure in reading.
“Over the years, through practice and going to the library, finding books she likes to read, maybe reading a book and seeing the movie - now she reads for pleasure, a lot,” she said.
