I broke camp, and began the long walk back to civilization as the sun set. There were seven miles to cover, and 1 would be hiking in the dark.
On the way down, I was guided by the sound of water and the spirits of the people who once lived together in those long vanished communities. It was dark and 1 could not see the trail; only ghostly visions of logs and trees veiled by shadows and my steaming breath. But I did not fall, nor did I lose the path.
When the lights of the last house came into view I was happy to be in the company of people again, and with, a new resolution to pay greater attention to those I loved.
The mountains will be there another day.
