Gowen enjoys the time he spends with his two young friends and believes they enjoy their time with him. “I learn from them - they have insights and interests that interest me. For Example, my new mentee was playing some songs I liked on the guitar, and I worked out accompaniments. From Chris, I learned a lot about cars - he really knows a lot. You learn a lot about kids, teenagers, what their world is like. For me, that’s applicable to my grandchildren, who range from 8 to 28.”
Ann Baumgardner, Starfish Program Director, said that she is amazed at the profound influence that mentors and mentees have on each other. “It is such a joy to see the relationships develop over time - each pair is unique. Some mentors are more like teachers, others are more like aunts, uncles, or grandparents. The Starfish Program is a wonderful opportunity for both adults and the youth in our county.” '
Like Geoff Gowen, Dorothy Armistead feels she gains at least as much from the program as she gives. “I get a lot out of it; it’s not a one-way street. I think maybe some people who don't mentor don’t realize it is a two-way street. You give and you receive. To have an influence on someone’s life is a big thing. I enjoy Kim’s company, and I feel that she enjoys mine. I think we’re better people for sharing the time that we share. I suppose that’s the bottom line."
