Melissa Kane Harris was content with her fastpaced life as an associate publisher in Manhattan. But like so many, her life changed irrevocably on September 11, 2001.

“I saw the first plane hit,” she said.

“I went back up to the office and back to work like every other New Yorker.” She told people what she had seen, thinking that it might have been a small airplane.

“No one believed me,” she recounted.

“Then the second plane hit, and then I knew.”

Harris was working at the time as an associate publisher for Art Knowledge Corp., a publishing company that put out high-end art magazines, she said.

That was eight years ago. Today, Harris, 39, has traded Madison Avenue for Main Street, Sperryville.

While figuring out what to do in Rappahannock, Harris ran the advertising department for CTVille We^klyyin Charlottesville.

Eventually, Harris decided to launch her own magazine, Flavor.

On Jan. 31, Harris hosted a launch party for the new magazine at the Copper Fox Distillery, in Sperryville (which makes Wasmund's Whiskey) for regional farmers and producers - the launch party was delayed until winter so the farmers could attend.

“I’ve always wanted to publish my own magazine,” said Harris.

“I realized there was a need integral to the local food movement.”

So that idea led to Flavor Magazine. The first issue was published in July 2008.

Jennifer Seidel, the magazine’s editor, describes Flavor, “as a tool for bringing eaters, farmers, artisanal food producers, wine makers and chefs together.”

Advertisers include many local businesses, vineyards, B&Bs, and producers as well as big names like Whole Foods Market and National Public Radio.
