I would like to weigh in on the
debate in The Rappahannock News by commenting on Carl Eborn's F b. 12 Letter to the Editor. Mr. Eborn argues that this ■' t Christian nation and that withe 1 the church we would be adrift without a moral compas> o guide us.
First says, “Thp founding fat he i s left behind many letters and other writings that clearly show they considered this a Christian Nation.” That was not true for Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. As students of the European Enlightenment • they were absolutely opposed to sanctioning any church in the Constitution. As Christopher Hitchens points out in his book on Thomas Jefferson, Madison and Jefferson were allied in their opinion that there should be no government-sanctioned religion with Jefferson writing, “Our civil rights have no dependence on our religious opinions...." This was authored at a time that Virginia levied taxes to fund the Episcopal Church and the penalty for heresy was burning.
Mr. Eborn writes, “If there is no truth other than that which can be quantified and proven, then the entire basis for morals, ethics, and even the foundation of our legal system is null and void. There can be no right and wrong without truth. Truth is the very basis of the Judeo
