Proponents of the bill sa> derelict buildings bring down property values. The bill, they say, would create an incentive for the owners of derelict buildings to fix them up, said Mark Flynn, a spokesman for the Virginia Municipal League. Flynn helped write the bill as a way to prompt property owners to renovate their decaying structures.
The bill was drawn up and written with the help of the VML, the Virginia Housing Commission and a group consisting of concerned citizens and private/public property interest groups.
No-excuse
needed for
absentee voting
Only two of the bills supporting early or no-excuse absentee voting have made it past “crossover," the midpoint of the General Assembly session.
One bill would allow early voting beginning 15 days before the election. The other would allow for noexcuse, in-person absentee voting.Both bills have been sent to the Republican-controlled elections subcommittee of the Privileges and Elections Committee, which tabled similar legislation introduced in the House this session.
Tabling the House bills killed the legislation at crossover.
Opponents to this legislation voiced concerns over the financial costs of early voting and expanding infrastructure to accommodate early voting during a time when the state is trying to cut costs.
The Virginia Electoral Board Association and the Voter Registrars' Association of Virginia, however, support the no-excuse, in-person absentee voting.
