Grabbing her son, and leaving the school building, she and Alex could look straight down Fifth Avenue and see the second tower. Alex saw the people jump to their deaths moments before the building collapsed.
“People were hanging onto the outsides of buses,” and the dust and debris was everywhere. Pregnant, and with her traumatized child, Harris walked away from the horror, and soon after, she walked away from New York for good.
She ended up with her children in a farmhouse just outside of Spenyville.
“We needed a place to feel safe and this (Sperryville) felt extraordinarily safe,” she said.
Her sister lived in Haymarket, and through her Harris learned of the Hearthstone School and thought that would be a good place for Alex to recover.
