While none of the four current candidates for two open Board of Supervisors seats has any experience in elected office. Stonewall Hawthorne District hopeful Chris Parrish 1 running on his experience - of being a farmer for 30-plus years in Rappahannock County, among other things.
Bom and raised "just over the hill" from his current home at Thornton River Farm m Viewtown. Parrish, 61, says he would use his deep knowledge of the county’s character - and its intrinsic value as a home to both agriculture and beauty - to find creative way's to keep anv oi that from changing. . “Open space, and darkness at night, are both parts of our viewshed," says Parrish, whose farm mostly produces horse hay and cattle. "And ti maintain that, you need to keep it easy to own raw lahd. So I’m a proponent of land use to make it easy to keep that open space.”
He says these beliefs, w hich include standing behind the county's comprehensive plan, a!-. make him a proponent of “incentives for easements, conservation easements, to retard (level opment" He and his wife, Caroline, currentlv have 400 acres in conservation easement
He also thinks there should be some kind of incentive for “people who wouldn't otherwise qualify for land use. because they don't have the acreage, to help them use their land to grow local produce. You know, buy fresh, buy local’ it's a real movement, and we're in a great location for it,” he says.
