The two artists have received numerous awards and have exhibited widely and both continue to paint in the postSoviet Russia. The works in this exhibition are, however, from the period prior to the collapse of the USSR.
The group of work comes to the gallery through local artist Kevin H Adams who, with the support of a not-for-profit Sister City program in place between Minneapolis and Novosibirsk, was invited by the Soviet government to accompany a traveling solo exhibition of his paintings to three cities in the USSR in 1989. The artists, while traveling and exhibiting, hosted him and they became good friends. They, in turn, came to the U.S., with Adams as host.
The exhibition is accompanied by a short film by PBS of Adams and the two Russians, in Minnesota, painting and discussing their collaboration, which wall run every day. The exhibition is up through Oct. 25.
On Oct. 17 Adams will give a gallery talk on the artwork and his experiences with the two artists. A reception follows.
