When the cylinder is full, an inflatable central bladder inside will press the grapes against the perforated outer edge of the barrel, and juice flows into a tray below, from which it will be pumped into steel tanks inside the building. (Vidal is aged in stainless steel, Chardonnay and other varieties in oak casks. )
WTiile the men load and press grapes, Cheryl mans the grill, and the morning’s workforce eats, drinks - and, to a one. is pretty darn merry.
“This is all Jorge's fault,” says a young woman from Fairfax, pointing playfully at Jorge Relea. a Northern Virginia transplant from Puerto Rico who had come to an earlier Gray Ghost harvest and persuaded a dozen friends and co-workers, most of them also originally from Puerto Rico, to come out for the Vidal harvest. “But it’s been pretty cool," she adds with a smile.
Relea says later the experience was way more than cool “Next time, I think we'll have probably 20 of us here.”
The Kellerts were married 38 years ago, not long after a college chemistry professor in Illinois, whose family operated a winery' in Germany, invited A1 out to the countryside to see how the stuff was made — and he was hooked, he says. The Kellerts moved here from Northern Virginia, transplanting the vines they’d started there at home, they produced their first commercial-label wine in 1993 and opened the winery a year later
Kellert retired from the Postal Senace and stopped commuting 11 years ago, when he realized he could actually make a living doing something that he completely enjoys.
“I love it," he says. "1 have a hard time keeping the smile off my face.”
