Another dozen smaller harvests in the year, says Cheryl Kellert. are handled mostly by the family. For the bigger crops - the Vidal, Chardonnav and Gray Ghost’s consistently award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon - volunteers are the next best thing to family. Why?
“One of the reasons we do the volunteer harvest program is that we believe in gentle handling of the fruit,” says Cheryl — who, since the vineyard was first planted in 1986, has hand-pruned every' vine herself (and Gray Ghost now cultivates more than 7,700 vines on 13 of its 25 acres! “And when you can hand-pick your pickers, people who are your customers and enjoy your wine, they’ll do everything they can to pick the grapes just the way we want them picked.”
