Welch's farm includes 50 acres of com and 150 acres of soybeans. All of the cropland has been placed into strips where he can rotate His crops and break pest cycles. He switched from a conventional tillage system to a 100 percent no-till system in the mid1990s. All of the strips are planted by no-till methods.
About half of the land is put into a barley cover crop every year. There are 150 head of beef cattle, 40 of which are sold annually as “all natural freezer beef" Seventy-five acres are in buffers through the federal CREP program; there are three watering troughs and over 15,000 feet of fencing.
