five generations. Some 230 acres are in pastureland where the farm raises 100 percent grass-fed beef, lamb and pastured pork.
All of the animals on the farm are raised without growth hormones, vaccines or antibiotics. There is rotational grazing and no commercial fertilizer is used. Clover is broadcast into the pasture fields every other year to increase nitrogen in the soil for other species of plants to use.
There are over 10 miles of new fencing. Several wells and spring developments feed 12 troughs. Over 140 acres are in buffers through the federal CREP program. The majority of the meat at Mount Vernon Farm is processed and sold locally: sales are up 20 percent over last year.
