Years For Coming Season
According: to I. T. Quinn, Executive Director of the Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries, reports from game technicians and wardens in the field indicate the best prospects in years for the coming quail season. * ■

Local heavy rains in the past fca weeks may interfere with the birds-in some areas, but generally speaking the all ovef state picture is highly optimistic/
Dry weather durtng the spring hatching season may have been one of the major factors in this year’s increase in Virginia’s most popular game bird, but Mr. Quinn stated that constant habitat improvement work by the state’s farmers and sportsmen, is also an Important factor in the increase. “The weather may be fine,” said the executive director, “But unless the birds have food and cover, they just won’t sur\ive.”
As an example of this, Mr. Quinn pointed out that in certain sections of the state where the livestock industry is predominant, the quail population will undoubtedly remain static as a low level. Most of the land in these areas is in pasture and is heavily grazed so tne birds have neither food nor shelter and thus cannot increase beyond a certain point.
