Hog mange has become so widespread in Virginia that it is Considered of major economic importance to the swine industry; according to Entomologist J. O. Rowell of_the--Extenskrrr_Servrce—~ at VPI.
The ailment, caused by a mite, is not easy to detect and may spread through an entire herd before it is noticed.
Mange usually shows up first around the eyes, nose, and ears. As it spreads, the hogs lose hair, their skins get rough and their vitality is lowered.
Rowell advises as a treatment spraying hogs with a suspension of benzene hexachloride or lindane powder in water. One thorough application usually is onough, but if lesions remain after thifee o* four weeks, the treatment should be repeated.
BHC o- lindane sprays produce no visible discomfort or 'damage to treated swine, although the musty odor of BHC can be detected on the animals for several days after, treatment
