Spittlebug Cause*
Alfalfa Damage
Damage to alfalfa and red clover from the meadow spittlebug has been reported throughout Virginia this year, says J. 0. Rowell, insect control specialist at VPI.
The damage is caused by the yellowish-colored insect, located in* masses of spittle-like secretion on the growing plants. The spittlebugs stunt the plants and cause decreased yields.
Rowell lists these tips for control : *
If the spittlebugs seem to be damaging alfalfa or clover, cut the crop as soon as possible. Then, when the hay is dry, remove it from the held and spray or dust the stubble with one of the suggested insecticides—toxaphene in emulsion form at the rate of% to 1 pound of the active ingredient par acre; DDT in emulsion form at 1 to 1 % pounds per acre; and lindane either as an emulsion or as a water-suspension at % pound per acre; or five percent chlordane dust, at the rate of 20 lbs. per acre. , -
Make the treatment immediately after the hay is removed from the field. Then the new growth for the second cutting will contain none of the poisonous residue from the insecticide.
Forage treated with the insecticides should not be fed to dairy cows, or to meat animals being finished for slaughter.
