The Early-Red-Fre variety with Excellent cite and good form, is showing better than it has for many years, the specialist reports.
The next variety to move on Virginia markets will be Red Havens.
Dreiling says most of the peaches in the state this yeaT are early varieties, rather than the more prominent Elberta. The Elberta is less “resistant to late spring freezes, and has suffered heavily this year. .
As for the insect-disease situation—-it’s not too severe a problem this year. There is a clean crop, with less-than-usual brown rot and insect damage.
The 1950 peach crop, however, is estimated , at about 950,000 bushels—a 45 per cent drop from last year. Nationwide, the outlook is for about 56,000,000 bushels, or 75 per cent of the 1949 crop.
In the Roanoke area, the peach crop will run about 1/3 to 1/2 of normal. Here too, early varieties are bearing heavier than the late varieties.
