How much lime do the Boils on your farm need?
P. H. DeHart, agronomist for the Extension Service at VPI, says now is a good time to take a soil sample, send it for a test, and find out about lime and plant food needs.
Agronomists at VPI ordinarily have a slack season in July, and can give. more prompt service on soil tests than at other times.
A soil test is particularly important if you’re planning pasture improvement and development. Alfalfa and ladino clover require an abundance of calcium and a proper soil acidity for best growth. DeHart says many soils through, out the state do not need lime, even though it has not been applied during the past five to ten years. On the other hand, soils that have been limed during the past five years may need addition* al applications for best growth of ladino and alfalfa.
If the soil does not need lime, you waste your money if you apply it, and your land may show over-liming injury. If the soil does need lime, and you don’t apply it, you’re wasting money spent for seed and fertilizer.
County agents can give detail* ed instructions for taking soil samples, and will supply sample boxes free of charge.
