Five Convicts Escape
State Road Force Camp
Four convicts from State Road Force Camp 11 at Culpeper are loose, probably in the Washington, D.C., area after breaking from a work crew on the Hoover road, about a mile from Route 29, between 2 and 2:30 Tuesday afternoon.
According to Trooper W. A. Buntin late last night, five convicts escaped, three white and two colored, but one was captured Tuesday night, after be evidently had got his hands on too much whiskey and was in ho condition to move rapidly. The four now at large are two white men and two , Colored, all serving long-term sentences for housebreaking and robbery. They aire armed with 'S ' .88 ’ .pistol. -f- .% | The prisoners escaped by attacking the guard, Gabriel Clat-" terbuck, and shooting him with bis own pistol. Following their escape, the convicts took a truck belonging to' Bomer.-Brown iw.the Revs neighborhood, Culpeper county,r and abandoned it later. Some time during the night they came to the farm of C. T. Guinn, Jr., near Reva, where Claude Lee McCallum, a teen-age fboy, and a friend Of about the same age are running the farm while McCallum’s mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Guinn, Jr., are in the hospital in Fredericksburg recuperating from a recent auto wreck. The boys were a little vague as to exactly what happened, but they saw the convicts during the night.
Later the four remaining convicts, following the capture of one, must have slipped by the police road blocks, evidently On foot, and stopped the car, a 1946 Ford, of Stonewall Kilby. They (forced Mr. Kilby to ride with them tb a small town between.! - Fairfax and .Alexandria, end there they released him. Mr. Kilby is now at his home near Slate Mills.
